Featured Speaker: Author Andrea Elliott
New York Times investigative reporter Andrea Elliott is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Her book, Invisible Child, is the astonishing story of eight years in the young life of a girl whose imagination soars like the skyscrapers she can see from her Brooklyn shelter. It is a story about the power of resilience, the value of family and the cost we all pay for inequality.
With Chanel Sykes
Dasani is the lead figure in Invisible Child. Her mother, Chanel, is a second-generation Brooklynite. Born in 1978, and growing up as the crack epidemic tore through Brooklyn, Chanel learned to survive without a steady home and, by the late ’90s, found an alternate family in the Bloods gang. She would quit that life to marry and raise eight children, struggling with drug addiction and homelessness while finding strength in her mother’s own story of redemption. “A person’s past is not their future.”
What is the Women’s Initiative? The mission of HomeFront’s Women’s Initiative is to mobilize a cadre of 1,000 caring and committed women of all ages who will lend their expertise and support to help alleviate family homelessness in our community. The Women’s Initiative works in concert with HomeFront’s rich array of programs and services. Through these efforts, we strengthen our community, making it a better place to live, work and raise a family.
